Two kinds of citizenship applications
Canada has two main citizenship applications. Choosing the right one is the first and most important step.
Proof of citizenship
You are already Canadian
You became a citizen at birth or by law, often through a Canadian parent or ancestor. You apply for a citizenship certificate to prove it.
Proof of Canadian CitizenshipGrant of citizenship
You want to become Canadian
You are a permanent resident who meets the time-in-Canada, tax and other requirements. You apply to be granted citizenship and take the oath.
Citizenship EligibilityWe also help with
- Complex citizenship matters. Older family records, name changes, adoptions, earlier refusals, or applications IRCC returned as incomplete.
- Citizenship documentation assistance. We tell you which records each person needs, review them as they arrive, and explain differences in names and dates.
- Family applications. Parents, children and grandchildren often apply at the same time. We organize each person's application so the connections are easy to follow.
Why a citizenship certificate matters
A citizenship certificate is the official document that proves you are a Canadian citizen. It shows your name, date of birth and the date you became a citizen.
If you were born outside Canada, you usually need a citizenship certificate before you can apply for a Canadian passport. A certificate does not expire.
